Hi,

I was looking for the same when I come across your entry. I found this http://5thirtyone.com/archives/875 - not exactly what I had in mind but seemed to be closest.

Better Titles for wordpress:

This code makes post appear with Titles only like: Nero 8 review

Instead of blog > archive > Nero 8 Review

Didn't try the rewrite title function but with this Plugin you have a special field in your form where you can write your title. As far as I understood, there is no need going back.
Another possibility would be using the custom fields. Somehow they are not very often used but very helpful. You can define your own keyword - value pairs and use for example the plugin 'Get Custom Field Values' http://www.coffee2code.com/archives/2004/06/30/plugin-get-custom/ to show them into your template.

Not exactly what I had in mind, but thanks. I'd like to write the custom post title on the fly without having to go back in and post-edit the title. Maybe something that utilizes the custom field would do the trick.

I am not sure, this is exactly what you are looking for but maybe you want to have a look at the All in One SEO Pack.
http://wp.uberdose.com/2007/03/24/all-in-one-seo-pack/
Beside a lot of other functionality it also has the option to rewrite your title.
